New Jersey Releases Cannabis Business Applications

Here’s the news we’ve all been waiting for! New Jersey has finally released their application round information for adult-use cultivation, manufacturing, and testing facility licenses. Read below for more details on the application process, when the round opens, and how to apply.

New Jersey Adult Use Market

New Jersey is what we would consider a competitive state for licensing. This means that many MSOs (multi-state operators) and newcomers alike will be clamoring for licenses because the round opens quickly and priority will be given to those that get their applications in first. Additionally, this is an east coast market that applicants have long-anticipated to open up and is currently out-pacing New York in getting set up.

Personal Use Application Specifics

The New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC) held a meeting last night to consider the Notice for Applications regarding adult use cannabis businesses in the State of New Jersey. The CRC will host an application support webinar on November 30th, 2021. The public can submit questions until November 19th, 2021. The CRC also offered that it will be publishing an FAQ document that will be regularly updated.

The CRC has not released rules regarding wholesale, delivery, or distributor licenses yet. To view the license types and fees associated with each personal use application, visit the CRC’s website.

New Jersey Application Deadlines and Notification

They voted to begin accepting applications for licenses in the categories of cultivation, manufacturing, and testing laboratories beginning December 15th, 2021. They will accept applications for retail licenses beginning March 15th, 2021. Applications will be accepted through an online portal and no print ones will be permitted.

Certain certified groups will receive priority grading. Microbusinesses in particular get the first pass, so be sure to check out our blog on microbusinesses in New Jersey. The CRC will prioritize application review of social equity and diversely owned businesses who are applying for conditional licenses over those who are applying for annual licenses.
